Advancing Odor Science: Thomas Vallarino Shares Expertise at WEF Webcast

On July 10, 2025, odour management professionals gathered virtually for the Water Environment Federation (WEF) webcast titled “Tools and Techniques for Precise Odor Assessment.” Among the presenters was Thomas Vallarino, Laboratory Director at St. Croix Sensory – Canada, whose shared insights into odour evaluation techniques and processes.

The webcast focused on odour complaint logging, field sampling and testing, odour assessment equipment, and odour measurements and evaluations.

Vallarino’s presentation emphasized the importance of odour measurement to answer critical questions related to identifying the source of odours and reducing emissions to the surrounding communities. Using methods such as field and dynamic olfactometry, labs such as St. Croix Sensory can provide objective, quantifiable and verifiable data.

St. Croix Sensory has a pool of over 50 professional assessors who evaluate with confidence and yield expert results. Our assessors are regularly trained and monitored to ensure compliance with EN13725 and ASTME544 standards for determining threshold and odour intensity values, along with additional training in evaluating odour characterization and persistency.

A Collaborative Effort

Vallarino was joined by other industry experts including Lindy Eppinger (Detection Instruments), Jim Ross (Webster Environmental), Casey Davis and Inken Mello (Black & Veatch), and Monica Maples and Mark Feltner (Hampton Roads Sanitation District). Together, they provided a comprehensive overview of odour assessment tools and strategies, making the webcast a valuable resource for engineers, regulators, and environmental professionals.

For those who missed the live event, WEF has made the webcast available for free* here, and attendees are eligible for PDH credits.  *Free registration required to view the webinar
